Sand that moves south here is lost down the canyon. Eventually the sandbars rise above the water as islands. Dunes no longer exist in many areas that are now protected by bulkheads and seawalls. If sea level changes are too drastic, time will be insufficient for wave action to accumulate sand into a dune, which will eventually become a barrier island through aggradation. There are three major theories: offshore bar, spit accretion, and submergence. In contrast are the Mississippi-Alabama (MS-AL) barrier islands (Fig. Figure 15.7. Rather than forming within the past few hundred or few thousand years, it is possible that barrier islands have been in continuous existence over the entire 18,000-year rise of sea level.
