For now temps are in the high 30s F and falling short of the predicted near 50 F. Look for all the trib flows to be on the rise and going off color. The green water is ideal but you can often have action in dirtier water then you think. On Saturday there were bass boats fishing on the south side next to the Port Gibson bridge. We encourage you to do the same with Brookfield, NYSDEC and/or Orleans County Tourism. Most noticeable drop will be the Oak since the Canal flows are also throttling back. Bit of a stalemate in the weather for now with warmish days but below freezing nites. There seems to be a stalemate between the open Lake temps and the trib water temps thanks to the relatively mild winter. Recent precipitation for now probably not enough to keep flows any higher then low-ish when Canal water is ended. Colder temps could bring back some icing conditions especially in the smaller waterways if lower flows prevail. Chance of another mixed bag precip type of storm that could add to whats on the ground already and add to that spate of water when it melts. A decent pair of polarized glasses should reveal pods of fish holding around gravel spots. Biggest brown trout so far is a 16-pound, 12-ounce fish out of Point Breeze, weighed in by Gary Cregan of Rochester. A little more rivermouth action now. Spring will offer up only so many cold water chances! Fish have been taking mostly spoons with a few meat and flasher/fly mixed in. We took a look at flows and found the same medium-ish or slightly high that its been and some stain, but maybe not as dirty as reported a few days ago. Another chance of precipitation for begin part of upcoming weekend although at this point the greater impact is forecasted south of the area. Look for better rivermouth and lower river action each day on cool or wet weather. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season. Try to anticipate dropping and clearing flows and be on the water when reasonable conditions come together! A cooler, gloomy day today (Monday) with forecasted warmer days ahead mid week with chance of precipitation and windy conditions around Wed, Thurs. The recent changing winds, lightning and storms are not good for fishing but things did become more stable. Nice to see some chances spread thru the watercourse now with fish that are all mostly in good shape. Mixed bag chances for lakers, browns, steelhead in the River or on the Niagara bar rivermouth. Not a lot of steelhead mentioned yet, but still plenty of time with colder weather ahead to bring on some chrome migrations. A couple of reports thru yesterday mentioned some hook ups on smaller browns and steelhead. Patience and persistence on the Oak may finally be paying off. No serious icing yet and all the downstream frog water is open. But the fish like stability and not surprises. Water temps have flirted with 40F but should slide back with the forecasted colder weather ahead. On the Oak its been exceptionally weedy and duckweedy but some of that material is moving out now. 3.5. Steelhead have been there and more likely to trickle in. Flows in the Oak are one click less then medium or what you might call somewhere in between moderate and medium. A fair number of Kings are loitering in downstream areas on the Oak with skein drifters still into them up at least until yesterday. Look for a bit of a temp shock there and the fishing action back on the rebound as things warm back up. Port Bay still has perch fishing along the north end of the bay. It has definitely brought out some more guys so not sure well see the typical fall off in the mid week angler numbers. Strong upstream headwater supplies are likely driving the water feed below the dam. That being said, the fish holding thermocline is yoyoing between 30 to over 100 down. Any future accumulating snow and melt may do that. Theres been on and off good action like at the Archers Club and some Kings continue to drop back from the dam. Flows will likely just open up minus any blow out, as long as there is no significant precipitation. When that fish hit the deck, big boy hit the 200 diver and headed for Niagara county. New York State is open for fishing and DEC encourages anglers to recreate locally at a nearby waterbody. For now after the past weekend it looks like flows are back down some in the Oak to about med or slightly high and less stained. Early fish always tend to head to the dam as it has the most oxygen and they are hoping to go farther upstream to cooler waters. Chance of fresh steelhead on the backside of the last higher flows or at least the past falls browns and steelhead should be redistributed. Fishing out deep has been hit and miss and no real pattern of lures to speak of. After a quick hit of real cold weather this past weekend, we are back to mild temps that are forecast at least thru this week. Remember the turbine channel can only get so high due to how much flow can pass thru the hydro plant. Warm temps are forecast today and tomorrow and seasonable thru the beginning part of the weekend. If you still have a boat in the water, you can fish west of Sodus Bay in 30 fow. Slight bump up in trib flows yesterday from little bit of rain and snowmelt. Many still in good green shape with some old moldies now on Halloween zombie patrol downstream. Even at this almost mid-Oct timeframe, theres still good hookup chances from the nearshore Lake Ontario all the way to the dam, so the fishing opportunity definitely will spread out. Likewise find Kings steaming up the Oak too with good slightly stained flows all around. Stay tuned tho for any future high water that could really perk things up. A few guys report their hookups include at least one real good big fish. On the south end of Newark has been a great place for catching bass. Fished the 26-27 line, a little west but not far. Even after that thru the upcoming weekend I still wouldnt call it cold just seasonably cool and continued dry. No doubt there are some guys out quietly getting into some browns and steelhead in the smaller tribs. This entices more brown trout and steelhead to enter and remain in these waterways, improving fish spawning conditions and expanding angling opportunities. The following report is courtesy of Capt. As quickly as flows were restored in the Oak over the past weekend the fishing likewise perked up again with some steelhead hooked and a few knarly Kings clinging to a hopeful life. IMO one nice silver fish is worth a whole bunch old upstream darkies. (There will be no fees for the 2021 canal boating season.) Approx 100,000+ King salmon and 10,000 15,000 steelhead are placed in the net pens for hopeful imprinting on the Oak Orchard. Any future rise in flows should perk up the action for fresh fish so well hope the upcoming forecasat brings that on either with rain or snow and then melt off. Evereything in the Oak remains open and fishable. Capt. Temps are forecast in the lower 30sF for highs and dropping back into the 20s at night with some colder temps in the upcoming forecast. From a small boat, drifting treated egg skein is a good approach to try, fished under a float. They scored 4 king salmon (17-20 lbs) and a trophy sized steelhead weighing in at 16 lbs. Weather is seasonable warm today and then forecast winter cold with wind for tomorrow and weekend. Anglers seeing and having hook up success on browns is encouraging we are likely on a trajectory to out pace last years brown trout action already. Chance of maybe an ever so slight bump up and back down quick with a little more color to the water. Oak rivermouth dredging operations are likely days away from finishing. Both father and daughter were smiling away as they were side by side working the fish to the boat. As we started getting into 90-100 we noticed a ton of bait and big fish on the bottom. Temps are on the mild side, dropping down some at night and thru today and over the next part of the week we are getting some melt off which should be good for maintenance.
